GRAFFITIS IN THE STREETS OF ATHENS

With the economic crisis that has plagued Greece for more than 7 years, the endless suffering of a large part of the population is particularly felt in urban areas. This has inspired a form of street art that is especially flourishing in central Athens such as Exarcheia, Votanikos, Gazi and Psiri, the latter being very close to the tourist center of Thission and Monastiraki. With several buildings left abandoned, the work of these street artists has been greatly facilitated. Sometimes this artistic expression is even encouraged and organised by neighbourhood associations.

The majority of the subjects covered express a peaceful revolt against inequality and social injustice, but at the same time a feeling of helplessness and resignation.
